Confirmed Heir

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.  Romans 8:16-17

Many times the circumstances of life cause us to question who we really are in God.  We wonder if we should even be counted worthy of any title in the kingdom let alone the title of an heir to the Kingdom.  Being a child of God is not about having a life that makes you worthy of the title “heir of God and joint heir with Christ, “ but rather the title comes from an obedience of heart that is confirmed within us by the Holy Spirit and a fighting spirit to hold firm to the truth of God.

In Galatians 5:22-23 we are reminded that “…the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, [and] self-control…”   Our human nature is against these things when suffering strikes, but when, through the help of the Spirit, we are able to exhibit this fruit through our obedience it is then we are shown our true spiritual family tree and as an added bonus, to the world, we glorify Christ.

Living in the Spirit is a constant battle and often times we are tricked by Satan that our suffering or pain is anything but fruit producing.   We become discouraged and look for every opportunity to flee, complain, and point fingers.  But when we make those types of choices we slowly lose that reminder from the Spirit that we are an heir to the Kingdom and our own desires make us lose sight of the importance of being in the will of God.

So instead of giving in I have chosen to fight and I have armed myself for battle.  One of the weapons I have armed myself with is a prayer written by A.W. Tozer which says:

“Now Lord, I have had enough of this.  I refuse to take any more of this heaviness and oppression.  This does not come from God – this comes from my enemy, the devil!  Lord, in Jesus’ name, I will not take it any longer – through Jesus Christ I am victor!”

Make a choice today that you will fight the lies that surround your suffering, grief, or hardship.  Instead, chose to be obedient to the Spirit and He will be faithful in confirming your divine spiritual lineage and filling you with the fruit of the Spirit that will make your life one that pours out glory to Christ.
