God, The Rock

Trust in the LORD forever, for in GOD the LORD, we have an everlasting Rock.  Isaiah 26:4

In reading this verse, I realized how little I know about God’s character as the “Rock.”  So I took some time and did a word study of the biblical references that relate God’s qualities as a “Rock.”  I hope you find it as enlightening as I did.

God’s character as the “Rock”:
·         His work is perfect
·         His ways are justice
·         He is a God of truth
·         He is righteous and upright
·         He is strength and power
·         He makes your way perfect
·         He makes you as swift, surefooted and beautiful as the deer
·         He set you in high places
·         He teaches you how to fight your enemy
·         He provides the shield of salvation
·         He is gentle/non-threatening
·         He enlarges your path so you do not slip
·         He is your salvation
·         He is your refuge
·         He is your defense
·         He is exalted high above man
·         He is a shelter and strong tower from your enemy
·         He is your defense that allows you not to be moved
·         He is a sure place of consistent refuge
·         He is the one who trains your hand for battle
·         He is a solid source of loving kindness
·         He is your deliverer
·         He is the One who subdues the people under you
·         He is the foundation on which solid faith is built
·         He is Jesus the Christ
(References taken from Deuteronomy 32:4; 2Samuel 22:32-37, 47; Psalm 31:2; Psalm 61:2-3; Psalm 62:2; Psalm 71:3; Psalm 144:1-2; Matthew 7:24; 1 Corinthians 10:4)

I am not sure which of these characteristics is most meaningful or applicable to your life today.  Whatever quality of God stood out to you the most, as a place where you need or desire God as a “Rock” in your life, take time to ask God to be your Rock in that way.  Let Him be the sure and steady foundation of your life, a place where you can put your foot and be certain it will always be on His perfect path.
