Transcendence Understood Through Meekness

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
And His greatness is unsearchable.”
Psalm 145:3

The word transcendence, defined by Miriam-Webster, is defined as “extending or lying beyond the limits of ordinary experience”. That is why verses like Psalm 145:3 and Job 11:7-9 are used to describe the transcendence of God by basically saying that man cannot understand God, He is beyond what we can comprehend, beyond what we can try to attain or reach, beyond any highest thought we may have, and beyond the farthest we could ever stretch ourselves.

Can you search out the deep things of God?
Can you find out the limits of the Almighty?
They are higher than heaven— what can you do?
Deeper than Sheol— what can you know?
Their measure is longer than the earth
And broader than the sea.”
Job 11:7-9

In realizing that there is no way we can ever come to a full understanding of God, we must not lose hope thought in searching for Him. That is the wonderful thing about God – He may be unsearchable but yet He is still within our reach. I will let AW Tozer explain how our transcendent God is reachable for all mankind as we continue to study the attributes of God while following along in Tozer's book, The Attributes of God.

God is transcendent. You'll never find Him on your own. Muslims can search for Him for a thousand years and not find Him. Hindus can cut themselves and lie on beds of glass and walk through fire and not find Him. Protestants can join churches and...not find Him. Philosophers can rise on rung after rung of thought and not find Him. Poets can soar away on imagination and not find Him...I point you to God the Transcendent One! And then I point you to the cross. But you will never know the meaning nor the value of the cross until God the Holy Ghost has done something within you to break you down and destroy your pride, humble your stubbornness, change your mind about your own goodness, blast away your defenses and take away your weapons...He will cause you to come down and become meek.”

When we are brought low and find that the cross is all that is left in front of us, it is then we begin walking on the road to understanding small tidbits of our God who is unsearchable, unattainable, all-consuming, awe-ful...really beyond any description we could possibly give to Him.

'For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,' says the
'For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.'”
Isaiah 55:8-9

Have you been searching for God and not finding Him? To find the God that is everywhere and yet who “extends beyond the limits of ordinary experience” means allowing ourselves to not get stuck in the ways of the ordinary, our naturally sinful and selfish ways. Too often we forget that everything which surrounds us is rooted in evil and draws us away from the Lord and every attempt we try out of our own ambition to get closer to God and understanding Him, only pushes us further away from coming to know who He really is. The cross alone brings us to God, and the cross of the Lord can only found in meekness - that is where true understanding of our unsearchable God begins.
